NOCC presents its 100th edition
of the Forecasts and Dekadal Climate Alerts bulletin for the five Agro
ecological zones of Cameroon
Throughout its
five agro-ecological zones, Cameroon is not spared from the harmful effects of
climatic disturbances. Indeed, in these zones, an upsurge in extreme climatic
situations (floods, droughts, etc.), instability in the dates or periods of the
start and end of the rainy seasons, and a tendency for average temperatures to
rise are increasingly observed. Unfortunately, these situations lead to a lot
of damage to the development sectors.
Over the
years, the agricultural sector, for example, is characterized by a strong
fluctuation in yields, with a tendency to decrease, as a result of the
instability of the seasons and the unequal spatial and temporal distribution of
rainfall. Similarly, in the health sector, there is an increase in the number
of epidemics of certain climate-related diseases (cholera, malaria, influenza,
meningitis, etc.) as a result of floods, severe droughts, etc. Like the Agriculture
and Health sectors, other development sectors useful for the emergence of
Cameroon such as water, energy, livestock, Public works sectors, etc. are
confronted by the multiple adverse effects of climatic disturbances throughout
the national territory.
To help these development sectors strengthen
their resilience to the adverse effects of the above-mentioned climatic
disturbances, the National
Observatory on Climate Change (NOCC) has been producing a Forecasts and Dekadal
Climate Alerts bulletin since 2018. In three (03) years, this scientific and
technical institution has produced one hundred (100) editions of this document
which is published every ten (10) days, i.e. three (03) times a month.
For
the release of the 100th edition in which some improvements were
made both in terms of form and content, a presentation ceremony presided over by
His Excellency Mr. HELE Pierre, Minister of Environment, Nature Protection and
Sustainable Development (MINEPDED), was organized on Wednesday, December 1st,
2021 at the CIDE in Yaounde. The ceremony was also attended by other sectoral
administrations, diplomatic representations, development partners and civil
society organizations.
